Register of Copyrights Calls for “Next Great Copyright Act”

The Register of Copyrights, Maria Pallante, recently testified before the Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property and the Internet urging Congress to create the “next great copyright act.” Her testimony, stressed the need for Congress to update many aspects of the existing Copyright Act.
NMPA President and CEO David Israelite applauded Pallante’s challenge that Congress tackle copyright. "There is no question U.S. copyright law has become outdated,” said Israelite. “ Among the many challenges is ensuring that it is easier for new business models to be licensed, and that the rights of songwriters who provide the content for these new business models are protected.”
The March 20 hearing is likely the first in a series of hearings on the Copyright Act. NMPA members will receive legislative updates as Congress explores potential revisions to copyright law that could impact songwriters and publishers.
