NEW YORK - November 30, 2001 - It was announced today that Jacqueline C. Charlesworth has been named the new senior vice president and general counsel for the Harry Fox Agency (HFA). Charles J. Sanders, who has served in that position since 1991, has been named senior vice president of legal and international affairs and counsel to the National Music Publishers' Association (NMPA). Charlesworth's responsibilities will include all legal matters with regard to HFA, including supervising litigation of sound recording-related anti-piracy issues, and establishing and maintaining relationships with counsels of publishers and record labels regarding operational issues. She will report directly to Gary Churgin, President/CEO, Harry Fox Agency. Sanders will now be enabled to focus exclusively on NMPA trade association matters, including legal, legislative, international, public relations, and lyric-related anti-piracy issues. For the last six years, Charlesworth was an associate in the litigation department at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrrison, representing songwriters and music publishers and specializing in intellectual property, as well as constitutional law, antitrust and general commercial litigation. Prior to that she was in the litigation department at Debevoise & Plimpton, and served as a law clerk for judges on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and the Southern District of New York. Her J.D. is from Yale Law School. "The Fox Agency has worked with Jacqueline for several years while she was at Paul, Weiss, and we are delighted to welcome her as our new general counsel," stated Churgin. "Her experience in intellectual property litigation and Internet licensing negotiations will be crucial to this agency as thousands of Internet music services change the dynamic of the music publishing industry and the way music is transferred from the creator to the consumer." Sanders joined the NMPA/HFA in 1986 and, prior to that, served as copyright counsel for G. Schirmer Music Publishers and Macmillan Publishing. A Derenberg/Brown Copyright Fellow at New York University School of Law (1984), he has been a frequently published legal commentator on copyright and Freedom of Information issues. In addition, Sanders is an accomplished musician with several album credits as a saxophonist. He will report directly to Edward P. Murphy, President/CEO, National Music Publishers' Association. "Having worked with Charlie over the past fifteen years," stated Murphy, "I am well acquainted with his capabilities, and extremely pleased that we'll be working so closely together on all of the crucial issues currently facing the songwriting and music publishing community both nationally and globally." Churgin added that "the transition in the HFA Legal Department will be a smooth one. I look forward to the continuation of our excellent relationship with Charlie." Both Charlesworth and Sanders look forward to their new roles and to working together in furthering the synergistic relationship between NMPA and HFA. "It has been my honor and my passion to serve and protect the American community of music creators and copyright owners for my entire professional career," stated Sanders. "I greatly look forward to the opportunity of continuing this important work along side Ed Murphy at NMPA, and in close cooperation with our colleagues at HFA." "This is a time of both great change and great possibility for the music publishing industry", added Charlesworth. "I feel privileged to be in a position to help HFA and those it represents meet the challenges and reap the rewards of the digital age." The National Music Publishers' Association, Inc., founded in 1917, works to protect and advance the interests of the music publishing industry. With over 900 members, NMPA represents the most important and influential music publishing firms throughout the United States. The Harry Fox Agency, Inc. provides an information source, clearing house and monitoring service for licensing musical copyrights, and acts as licensing agent for more than 27,000 music publisher principals, who in turn represent the interests of more than 160,000 songwriters. Besides the core business functions of licensing, collections, and distribution of royalties, HFA conducts periodic record company and other user audits on behalf of its principals. |
