NMPA Announces Chairman John Conyers
as 2009 President’s Award Honoree
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 18, 2009

WASHINGTON—The National Music Publishers’ Association (NMPA) will present its 2009 President’s Award to the Hon. John Conyers, Chairman of the Committee on the Judiciary of the U.S. House of Representatives.

“Music publishers and songwriters across our country are grateful for the leadership of Chairman Conyers,” said NMPA President and CEO David Israelite. “He has been a tireless champion for artists and creators, recognizing their importance to our economy and our culture. We are pleased to present him with this year’s President’s Award as a token of our appreciation for his service and dedication.”

The President’s Award is announced each year in conjunction with the NMPA’s annual gathering of songwriters and music publishers in New York City.

An avid jazz fan, Conyers has been a longtime advocate for writers, performers, producers and publishers of music. As the Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Conyers (D-MI) is at the forefront of shaping the nation’s intellectual property rights enforcement laws. He most recently spearheaded Congress’ efforts to make sure federal law enforcement agencies have the resources they need to get the job done on both domestic and international fronts via the PRO IP Act, which was signed into law late last year.

The NMPA established the President’s Award in 2005 to recognize an individual who has been a leader on issues of importance to music publishers and songwriters, and who works diligently to strengthen intellectual property protection. The award will be presented in Washington, DC, at a date to be determined.

The NMPA Annual Meeting will be held June 17 from 4-6 p.m. at the Marriott Marquis Hotel, 1535 Broadway, followed by a cocktail reception. Members of the media are invited to both the meeting and reception.
