NMPA Launches its Gold & Platinum Awards Partnership Program
Events to be Held in Nashville October 18 and Los Angeles October 22
Honoring Daniel Powter, Jerry Leiber, Mike Stoller,
Chris DuBois, Josh Kear and Chris Tompkins

Washington, DC - National Music Publishers’ Association President and CEO David M. Israelite announced today the launch of the NMPA Gold & Platinum Composition Awards Program. Two events are scheduled as part of the launch. The first awards reception will be held October 18 in Nashville at the Cabana Restaurant. The second event will be held October 22 in Los Angeles at the Four Seasons Hotel.

In Nashville, awards will be given to Chris DuBois for “Mud On The Tires,” and Josh Kear and Chris Tompkins for “Before He Cheats.”  In Los Angeles, Daniel Powter will receive an award for “Bad Day,” and Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller will receive Lifetime Achievement Awards.

The NMPA Gold & Platinum Composition Awards Program is done in partnership with the Recording Industry Association of America. The program celebrates the contributions of songwriters and composers of singles that have been certified by the RIAA as Gold & Platinum.

“These extraordinary songwriters have made a significant contribution to the world of music, and it is an honor to recognize them,” Israelite said. “With the launch of the NMPA Gold & Platinum Composition Awards Program, we will have even more opportunity to honor the talents of our hardworking songwriters behind these top-selling singles.”

Chris DuBois
Chris DuBois formed Sea Gayle Music in March of 1999 with Country Superstar Brad Paisley and multi-platinum producer Frank Rogers as a joint venture with EMI Music Publishing.   Since that time, Sea Gayle Music has become one of the top publishing companies in Nashville. He wrote “19 Somethin’” for Mark Wills, which spent seven weeks at number one. Recently, he climbed the charts with Josh Turner’s #1 single “Your Man” and Brad Paisley’s #1 single “Online.”

Josh Kear
Josh Kear’s smash song “Before He Cheats” by Carrie Underwood won the People’s Choice award for Best Country Song of the Year. The Tennessee native has also seen his songs recorded by a list of artists that includes Garth Brooks, Jimmy Buffett, Hank Williams, Jr., Tim McGraw, Kenny Rogers, Lynard Skynard, Chely Wright and Bucky Covington.

Chris Tompkins
Hailing from Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and influenced by the likes of Jackson Browne and Neil Young, Chris focused on developing himself as a professional songwriter.  Chris has had cuts by Jimmy Buffet and Hank Williams Jr. American Idol winner Carrie Underwood recorded his song “Before He Cheats,” landing the number one spot on Country radio for five consecutive weeks. Chris is currently a staff songwriter for Big Loud Shirt Industries.

Daniel Powter
Daniel Powter’s debut single “Bad Day” first attracted the attention of the French market after the song was used in a Coca Cola television commercial in France in late 2004.  The single rapidly reached the number one position in the pop charts there, and replicated that success throughout the bulk of the world during 2005.  “Bad Day” attained the number one position on the U.S. Billboard Chart in early 2006 and remained at that position for five consecutive weeks, becoming the biggest selling digital single of all time.  Daniel is currently in the studio recording his next album with Linda Perry and anticipates a release early in 2008.
Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller
Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller are among the most influential songwriters and music producers in post-World War II popular music. Their first major success came in 1953 with Big Mama Thornton's # 1 R&B hit, "Hound Dog," which became a worldwide smash when it was covered by Elvis Presley in 1956. Over the years, they’ve written numerous hits, including “Jailhouse Rock,” “Kansas City,” “Yakety Yak,” and "Stand By Me."  Leiber and Stoller were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1985 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.
